I think a private list in this case is definitely ok from my point of view,
especially if it's a forum for discussing relatively complicated issues like
corporate sponsorship, and travel subsidies. Our GNOME conference team (GUADEC)
has a private list. It should be very public that people are welcome to join the
conference team however, and once they join they'll be expected to do heavy
lifting in return for being on the private list.
