Yes, a good idea.

The majority of the people ("we") subscribed are

a) not very good at graphical/designer stuff (it's for
a good portion also a marketing issue)

b) "We" are not even sure what it should tell people.
Instead "we" put the cart before the horse: looking
for a logo/mascot and try to find out whether it is
somehow related to what "we" think it should express.

c) this thread is leading nowhere IMO. There's no
single leader who says "this is it".
Supposed if somebody comes up w/ a good suggestion
for a good number of people here: how can anybody
tell? There must be a voting system (democratic approach).

What I would suggest is

1) good designers should be found (see a).
Either amongst us (doubt that there will be enough,
I liked the idea of the hatching dragon though).

Or: Sun could hire them if they don't have any.
It might be also good to approach a designer like
"hey, we have this cool project and this is about
this and that. What kind of logo would express
our project? Or would you rather pick a mascot?"

Or: A public contest (definitely not limited to the scope
of this mailing list) might be an alternative, of course
  there should be a reward.

2) Suggestions need to be preselected based on some criteria:
   - is/was this logo/mascot used somewhere else?
   - could there be legal implications?
   - ...
(If it is a public contest, there might be other
   criteria.)

10 logos/mascots would be the outcome here (one
or two hired designers would have that much output
   anyway)

A jury would do the preselection.

3) Public voting within the OpenSolaris community about the
   10 proposals.

In general they aren't bad IMO, coins of some countries are
a little bit boring though ...
