Hi ....
I'd like to point all the user group list owners to the OpenSolaris
Website guidelines http://opensolaris.org/os/site_guidelines/ and remind
everyone of the mail list policy:
-----------------------------------
Mail Lists
Each community is responsible for the proper management
of their mailing lists. Lists are subject to review based
on the TOU and may be suspended or removed due to insufficient
traffic or poor management of non-member message postings.
Insufficient traffic is defined as
* No posts in the last month;
* Or less than 3 posts in the last 3 months.
----------------------------------
Basically, if mail lists are not used and properly managed, they will be
deleted or at the very least suspended. There are several user group
lists that have not been used for many months, and from time to time the
website team has to go in an clean out massive amounts of spam because
the list is not managed at all. I will ping those lists and leaders
individually as the migration process continues.
Managing your list should be much easier now with the mailman upgrade
recently. There are a couple of new features you may have noticed:
First, under "Tend to pending moderator requests" there is an option to
"Discard all messages marked Defer" and under "General Options" there is
an option at the bottom of the page to "Discard held messages older than
this number of days [...] Use 0 for no automatic discarding." Since I
manage advocacy-discuss, I have this set to 7 days.
I'll make these policies and features more clear in the user group
proposal process, and I'll also put it in as a reminder in every new
user group list I create.
