I don't think that it is fair to assume that a "mentor" is going to be 
someone who can substitute for going through the sort of structured 
classroom-and-quiz training that you're talking about.  That work has a 
place, too.

[And so does community-generated training materials - I would love to see 
more of that sort of thing: sometimes people on-the-ground and 
in-the-field see things that might not be obvious in the documentation.]

You might get well-fleshed-out ideas about how to debug a particular 
system or programming problem, or how to work around a workplace social 
issue from a community mentor; you're much less likely to get an extensive 
self-study guide to iSCSI from a volunteer.
