Yes, very much so.  Sometimes the acquisition of a faculty advisor is 
mandated by local campus policy, as well, for university-based groups.


On another topic... it is relatively common, at least for universities in 
the US, for recognized student organizations to be able to request minor 
sums of money (for "important stuff") from a campus "student activity fee" 
that all students have been charged.  This would be a good thing to 
suggest investigating, for groups being newly spun up: checking to see 
what the university can help to support.
