hey ... I know pretty much nothing about what's involved in the creation 
of mascots -- such as trademark law, branding issues, etc. Maybe someone 
from marketing can help you on that part because I know it can get 
complex. However, I just found out recently that the Japan NetBeans 
community created "Neko-bean" http://ja.netbeans.org/nekobean/. It sort 
of looks like a cat (neko in Japanese) in the shape of the NetBeans 
grid/box. It's an image, as you can see, but it's also a little toy that 
people hang from their cell phones here. Everyone seems to like it so I 
guess it's good to have around. :)
