Hi Jim,
I was thinking more like having a media chutzpah moment (for maximum publicity). Something like Intel just announced the release of Centrino 2, and we immediately have an informal news article which links to a blog that discusses some test results of running Solaris on this new chipset. Wouldn't this be very nice? :-)
This is definitely not a corporate announcement type, but would require tight coordination with and close support from Sun's internal developers (because of NDS and whathaveyou).
As a personal experience, for quite some time, Solaris was the only OS (other than Windows, of course) that works with my mother's ThinkPad R61i. (The only Linux distro that worked with the GMA 3100 chipset at that time was Sabayon, but it shouldn't count because it boots into the frame buffer mode.) I think Solaris has a very unique and advantageous mechanism that works very well with cooperating hardware vendors to quickly bring the benefits of new devices to end users. This is something that IMO has not received the kind of interest that it deserves.
