Sun is conspicuously trying to make opensolaris look and act like a top linux desktop distro, presumably to grab more desktop users.  Learning about unix has nothing to do with that goal and doesn't matter at all.  

Why do you need to learn about "unix" when the software you are using is all graphical GNOME apps?  Answer: you don't.  Or at least I don't.  And neither do the literally one billion people who are using microsoft windows.
