Yep, the priority was to get something out that the widest number of people
could use - many many many many more people have x86 boxes available than
sparc, especially spare ones that they could use to try out a new OS build.
There were also dependencies on other projects for SPARC that simply
weren't done by the deadline imposed (zfs boot, Xorg graphics drivers,
etc.) - those are being worked on.
