Hmm, lets see...

System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager
   lets me play with all the knobs, but says nothing about how to turn it on.

System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects
   is not at all obvious as being the magic knob that enables compiz...

And, it does NOT work under virtual box...
