OpenSolaris needs much more resources then this piece of HW can offer. Use what's appropriate like this http://www.kernel-panic.it/openbsd/embedded/ or other BSD or some specialized version of Linux. Solaris can easily be shrunken down to fit on this device. I've got a version of OpenSolaris which runs on a very similar system (500MHz Geode). Check out the following blog entries: http://blogs.sun.com/jtc/entry/opensolaris_on_the_smallest_system The headless version uses up about 60MB RAM when executing, leaving lots of room for customization. Here's how a version can be created: http://blogs.sun.com/jtc/entry/framework_to_help_create_small Now I've got the EON distribution (http://sites.google.com/site/eonstorage/) running on this thing and have a ZFS-based network appliance which draws a whopping 7.5 watts 24x7. -- Jim C Tomas Bodzar wrote: > Sorry, but are you crazy? What shows ::memstat from mdb -k ? What's the output from vmstat, prstat, top and so on when idle and with some load? It can be good project from testing point of view, but just because you can do it doesn't mean that it's generally good idea (with UFS it will be more better idea). PS: Second post talks about Solaris 10 u3 not about OpenSolaris. For first post it will be good to see top output. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org From darrenm at opensolaris.org Mon Nov 23 04:46:50 2009 From: darrenm at opensolaris.org (Darren J Moffat) Date: Mon, 23 Nov 2009 12:46:50 +0000 Subject: [appliances-discuss] open solaris on soekris net5501 In-Reply-To: <151346291.471258747249974.JavaMail.Twebapp@sf-app1> References: <151346291.471258747249974.JavaMail.Twebapp@sf-app1> Message-ID: <4B0A843A.5090102@opensolaris.org> Tomas Bodzar wrote: > Sorry, but are you crazy? It is currently being ported to very low memory ARM systems see: http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Project+osarm/ -- Darren J Moffat From bodzart at openbsd.cz Mon Nov 23 10:13:42 2009 From: bodzart at openbsd.cz (Tomas Bodzar) Date: Mon, 23 Nov 2009 10:13:42 PST Subject: [appliances-discuss] open solaris on soekris net5501 In-Reply-To: <4B0A843A.5090102@opensolaris.org> Message-ID: <417225857.251259000052101.JavaMail.Twebapp@sf-app1> It's not about possibility to install/run it, but about usability under load. That's why I'm asking for outputs when box is under load. ZFS is not so minimalistic in this area. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
