To Eric: Yeah, I guess I'm thinking of something like that... but not nearly as technical.

To Dave: Yeah, the mac one is so fluffy as to be almost useless. They used to have a better one.  Yet, even that diagram is useful for providing a developer very basic orientation about which parts of the system they might care to dig into next and implicitly define various buzzwords (aqua, darwin, cocoa, carbon)  I agree with you that scope and charter is important.

Unfortunately, I'm not certain how to articulate the charter and scope I have in mind. Something like "give me a list of the major systems that make up Solaris and what the spirit of their relationships are.  The goal is to give someone a sense of the ingredients, like you get on the side of a box of food.  Or maybe the list of parts in an assemble-it-yourself kit (5 1inch screws, 14 angle irons, etc).

I'm attaching a very crude example of the kind of thing I have in mind.  does this resonate with anyone?
