From ian at ianbrandt.com Wed Oct 3 22:42:51 2007 From: ian at ianbrandt.com (Ian Brandt) Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 22:42:51 -0700 Subject: [approach-discuss] Rough Start Message-ID: <31CF9411-8080-4CC7-9B65-4C5A9C1D281A@ianbrandt.com> Not to complain about something that is free, but for the sake of feedback I wanted to share my experience trying to get my hands on SXCE b73... I've begun the download with the Sun Download Manager, but it's going at only 2-6KB/s with a current time remaining of some 169 hours. I have a 7Mb/s connection and have attempted other downloads that verify my connection is fine otherwise. I tried to start the download straight from the browser, but the speed was no better. I went to http://dlc.sun.com/torrents/ looking for torrents (which would seem a very sensible way to deliver gigabytes of open source binaries), but all the links are broken. I tried to register on opensolaries.org, but the first e-mail confirmation link to https:// www.opensolaris.org/signupConfirm.jspa said the token was invalid. The second link to http://www.opentech.org.cn/os/signupConfirm.jspa worked, but then routed me to the Chinese site, which is definitely not where I initiated the registration from. That's all rather discouraging - and I find the Sun Download Centre very slow to. You might want to try saving the files directly and not using the Download Manager. I do know that people at Sun are working on an improved Download Centre and also Project Indiana ( http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/ )is going to produce a CD image which is redistributable, both of which should go some way to alleviate the problem - both should be happening in the next few months (but I realise this doesn't help in the meantime). I hope things start to improve once you have downloaded the image. I'm surprised by this part, but I'll ask to see what's up. Finally: we are trying, in the Indiana project, to make a redistributable LiveCD with a packaging system that can add software later. (Not quite revolutionary, I know.) Prototypes should become available in the next month or so--so we'll have mirrors, torrents, and a smaller object to download. Me too! ;) I didn't take screen shots, but I doubled checked all the addresses in my browser before posting. The registration, and two activation urls were all still there in tabs. I definitely registered from opensolaris.org (left menu in English), and the activation link that worked was the opentech.org.cn one (left menu was Chinese). > Finally: we are trying, in the Indiana project, to make a > redistributable LiveCD with a packaging system that can add software > later.
