We have a package name registry,  but no category registry. The current set of Solaris packages only use "system" and "application", with the exception of mostly the JDS packages. The Solaris SVR4 Requirements doc states:

The manpage for pkginfo(4) states:

CATEGORY    A comma-separated list of categories under which
                 a  package  can  be displayed. A package must at
                 least  belong  to  the  system  or   application
                 category.  Categories  are  case-insensitive and
                 can contain only alphanumerics. Each category is
                 limited in length to 16 characters.

So I believe they must have at least "system" or "application", but additional categories can be used.
