If you are looking to enable configure to go to the correct search
paths, this
should do the trick:
CFLAGS="-I/usr/local/include" LDFLAGS="-L /usr/local/lib -R
/usr/local/lib" ./configure
It'd also enable your apps to be built with the correct embedded search
paths.
