Though I don't doubt that the Cooltools stack is better than the stock build, it looks from skimming the documentation that it doesn't run any platform-specific optimizations (xarch or fast). Does it even do a 64-bit specific build? I can imagine that this would make a big difference. Oh, I also believe it to be shown that the SunStudio compiler generated code outperforms the gcc code (at least on Sparc). This is all anecdotal because I don't remember where I read it.
