Sounds a bit like the bug I was having last week, which was caused by
a relocation of the libXau* libraries between builds (from /usr/
openwin/lib to /usr/lib). If that's what it is, a bit of judicious
symlinking, or logging in with dtlogin rather than gdm, should help.
