[desktop-discuss] Can I use Gaim with an invitation-only IRC channel?

I have a channel that requires me to register via password, then invite 
myself in.  In xchat, I issue these commands to the subwindow that gets 
created
when I connect to the server (irc.oftc.net).  However, as far as I can 
tell, gaim connects to the irc server automatically and does not let me 
interact
with that first channel (or whatever it is).  I know it exists only 
via:  Accounts-> <choose 1>  -> view Motd.

Is there a way to do this in gaim?  This is on gnome 2.14, snv_51
