I don't think they should. Just like the Ubuntu project has shown us,
great improvements can happen whenever your resources have a primary
focus and don't try to split those improvements over two environments.
Even SuSE to a certain extent has favored GNOME resource wise -- look
at the results.

I think KDE users are best off having 3rd parties provide their
desktop or it possibly being part of the companion project. JDS, to
me, needs to remain the focus of Solaris when it comes to a modern
desktop environment.
