The main reason why GDM hasn't become the default is that it does not
allow user's to "drop to console login". Once Virtual Terminals (VT's)
are implemented in the kernel, it will be easier to make GDM the
default login program on Solaris so you don't need to switch by running
the svcadm commands.
Or perhaps at some point we will decide "drop to console" isn't
important enough of a feature to hold back the switch. This has
been discussed, but hasn't had enough momentum to actually
inspire a switch.
