  Perhaps "existing thing or anticipated thing" (or something like
  that).  One of the conclusions I took away from an earlier discussion
  was, if (a) there is a common foo(1) in BSD and (b) that foo and a GNU
  foo are not identical, then (c) selecting /usr/bin/foo will involve
  controversy.  I don't think this case should set the default outcome
  for such controversies.

  I'll spin out a new version with Laca's correction, Danek's cases,
  Stefan's manual page section, Bill's opinion, and this point as well
  (after a meeting or two).
