CDE isn't too bad.  Its certainly much better than gnome in this
particular regard.  But it isn't OpenSource, and my fear is that Sun

Blackbox would work, I think.  It certainly is minimalist.   My only
question, not having used it, is does it provide the "normal" window
handling widgets on the top of the window.  It _appears_ to from the
screen shots I've seen.

Yeah, that would be a big help.  Presumably we have to have some
lightweight browser (no idea what we'd use) to help out with managing
because a lot of "sysadmin" tools are web based these days.  (Not that
I'm particularly fond of that approach.)
