[desktop-discuss] aac files in rhythmbox

Hi folks,

I've been trying to get rhythmbox to play files copied from my ipod which are in aac (m4v) format withought much success.

mplayayer from blastwave can play them fine, so I know the files are ok. It's using the faad encoder.

This plugin is not available in nv_47, or for that matter from blastwave for gstreamer. Its tucked away in plugins-bad on the gstreamer website! I complied these fine but the docs mention running gst-register, which seem to be removed from gstramer, so I just copied the libraries from -bad into /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/ and deleted ~/.gstreamer. Perhaps I should take a hint from code labelled -bad!

Rhythmbox now displays the songs and tags correctly, but still does not actually play the file. When I click on properties of the file I get a message at the bottom of the dialogue box of 'Gstreamer encountered a general stream error'.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

I haven't managed to debug this very far. I can't see how to check exactly what library rhytybbox is using to play the file. gst-typefind says the files are "audio/x-m4a" but that could match the qtdemux plugin or faad which cam also play mpeg4.

Any thoughts on how I can debug this further or whether there is an easier way to play aac files in rhythmbox?

Thanks,
~Al
