For your final consideration pleasure, I'll point out
that some people have gone the extra mile to
create a Solaris desktop single-box solution along
the lines above, by installing a Solaris Sun Ray
Server in a VM, and connecting to it via a Sun Ray
thin client.  Supposedly performance is
acceptable, although I'm sure this depends on the
hardware platform (I don't know the platform used
for this example).

Of course if you're doing driver development of
some sort this is probably not practical.
