While there, can we add readline support to use up/down arrows in the command line? I always build my own version because of that...

In the $python_src/Modules/Setup.dist (before configure), just uncomment the two lines starting with "#shared" and "#readline ...". The #readline also needs -I/path/to/readline/include and -L/path/to/readline/lib.
