So you can. And it works quite well. Thanks for the tip!

(This has the additional advantage over sdtimage that I can save
in png format, which is something that would have been nice for
sdtimage to do.)

The downside is the following:

% ptime sdtimage -snapshot

real        1.526
user        0.055
sys         0.024

% ptime gimp
This is a development version of GIMP.  Debug messages may appear here.


real       12.191
user        7.342
sys         0.569

And it took very much longer the first time I ran it...
