I thought about suggesting that at the time, but recently there was a very similar thread on the FreeBSD Usenet group along similar veins... basically, someone asking why the FreeBSD ports system hunts all over creation to download tarballs when it'd be much more reliable (and easier to maintain) to have mirrors on the various freebsd.org distribution sites.

I get the impression from some of the posts that some distributions really don't care for third parties distributing their stuff.  We all know that Linux distributions do it all the time, sometimes regardless of what the author wants, but I was hesitant to ask for something that might open up one of those dreaded *political* cans 'o' stuff.
