   on gnome-terminal, select Edit->Current Profile, click on 
compatibility tab,
change Delete Key generates: to ASCII DEL or change the gconf key for 
/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/delete_binding to ascii-del
using the gconf-editor.
