You could have a look at this fine mp3/ogg/flac/... player. It is
a daemon running in the background and several frontends are available.
In the CBE spec-files-extra repository there are *spec files to
build the software.
A short introduction how to set up the build environment is
here http://sarine.nl/gmpc-solaris-build (I have to refresh this
doc, but should still work)
You can store your music on a central server and place the soundcard
there or use shout streaming over the net and listen from each client
to your favorite music (client: gmpc for X11/gtk, pitchfork for your
browser and several others, setup n-instances of the daemon mpd and
icecast)
For playing videos I use mplayer from the same repository (spec-files-extra).
