Doug,

I had not tried rebuilding my font cache. Frankly, I was not even familiar with the "fc-cache" command.  Guess what?  That did it!  Thank you very much.

I could see from running truss that all the applications I tried starting were having all these font problems, but I had no idea you could rebuild the font cache.
