You can always re-install the original packages if things go wrong.

Yes, exactly.

This won't work unfortunately. When you do this, each component
is built (or attempted) against what's currently installed on the
system. So if you have 2.16 installed then most modules will fail
because they will be looking for 2.17.x features.
If you don't want to uninstall your desktop, an alternative is
setting up a chroot environment. (I think Damien posted our
scripts to desktop-discuss.)
