Apologies, I assumed when you said that you could not use them in
gnome-terminal, that meant that you couldn't use them in the *shell*
or applications running from it inside the terminal. I didn't know you
meant the terminal program itself didn't recognize them ;)

Personally, it's far more annoying to me to not be able to use them in
vim, at the command line, etc. in the terminal window than to use them
on the terminal (which I wouldn't want).
