Oh, due to the level of effort involved in backporting GNOME 2.18 from a corporate model standpoint while having to implemented other technologies to make it work properly - this would have to be more of a external community project worthy of the effort.

I've also consider the level of effort to train Sun customer support personnel, educators, call centers, and sales reps on such a venture. This includes having to update documentation and training courses. Then, getting clients comfortable in deploying a new desktop environment with their existing apps when they are already getting their arms around the complexities of a new OS. We of course have to think of the QA involvement and time to test internally. I'm sure this wouldn't sit to well since support would be needed for GNOME 2.0/2.6 on older Solaris releases which takes away from devoting time on GNOME 2.18.0+ projects. 

Ok, sometimes we asked for a bowl of applesauce but have to consider the number of apples needed to make it... Touche!
