[desktop-discuss] "Network Servers" icon?

this is a really basic question, but the Network Servers icon that is always present on the JDS desktop-- what does it do?  i mean what kind of network protocol do you have to run to have anything show up in there?  i've got multiple solaris machines on my local network, and i've never seen any show up in that box.

so i'm guessing you have to be running NIS or Samba or something to see any machines... if you haven't guessed yet, i'm not a network guy ;)
