Don't know about support levels, but more manageable updates might be  
the sort of thing that's on the cards for Project Indiana (the binary  
OpenSolaris distribution that Sun announced last week).  However,  
there is no ETA for that right now, or even a clear definition of  
exactly what it's going to be, as it will doubtless be somewhat  
guided by community input.
