   For a small GUI, I would recommend yo to use the python binding of GTK+.
You can get lots of example from /usr/demo/jds/bin/pygtk-demo.
  Since python is a scripting language it would be easier to start 
playing around iwth it.
Otherwise, you may want to start writing in C -r with C++ binding.
  There are quite a bit of tutorial on the net as well if you google it.
