After working on 1394 for a couple of years, I've come to conclusion 
that if *someone* does *something* about it, good things will come out. 
Complexity doesn't matter. DMA+IXL combo is pretty gnarly, so are the 
Linux interfaces - you're going to sweat your butt either way.
