I suspect that the NULL came from some garbage in the logs caused by a kernel panic. However, I upgraded to SXCE snv_71 and things are much worse. I get a popup:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

Some things, such as themes, sounds,or background
settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time
you log in.

My assumption is that my vermillion installation got in the way.  So, my new question is how do I properly upgrade from the snv_71 disk so it backs out the vermillion installation completely? A fresh install would be very painful.
