Interesting...  Part of the problem, however, is that the behavior was as 
expected for days, then I hit some accidental combination of keys which 
caused this change to suddenly become effective on the fly.  If this were 
some sort of feature, then I'd have expected to have experienced it 
consistently.  Not all of a sudden one day while typing an email message 
in Thunderbird...
