Yep, I agree.  If it was running fine for days and the strange "compose"
behavior started unexpectedly, it must be something different than the
"sundeadkeys" configuration feature that I'm getting with german usb
layout keyboards.

The "sundeadkeys" xkb configuration can be observed immediately
when the X11 server and dtlogin starts.  In the dtlogin login screen,
you don't get a character when you the the accent chars ` or ', or tilde ~.
