Thanks for the detailed information.  I guess my suggestion, though, is to change the default hot key for all users, as it appears to be much too easy to depress these characters, at least on the keyboard configurations that Seb and I have.  It would be much better, IMO, to have a sequence of keys that could never be accidentally hit by normal typing patterns.  Any chance of entertaining that idea?  It's really quite a confusing situation when you don't know what is happening.  Similar to the hit the space bar 5 times on Windows and enable sticky keys and everything gets selected without holding the mouse down (a friend just called me last week freaking about about that).
