Hi Seb,
Not sure how to make Compiz do what you want, but there may be a workaround...
If your using GNOME and just want to change the background image, you could do
this using GConf...
e.g
gconftool-2 -s -t string /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename <path>
Of course this also assumes that you configure it to render an image on the
background - you can do this in the Background tab in gnome-appearance-properties.
