Yes, that doesn't seem to do anything useful with compiz.

I did see that.  The idea with the script is that it tells xplanet to 
output to a file (png) instead of the screen, and the script regularly 
kicks enlightenment via some IPC mechanism to tell it to redraw the root 
window using the updated image.  I could play the same trick with 
gconftool...
