Yes. You need to compile the libdvd*** library that lets you playback DVDs. I also emailed the package maintainer at Blastwave and he confirmed he is updating the VLC package to VLC 0.8.6e.

Again, since I intended to work on a full featured ported version of VLC there are codecs and such that I've am addressing. I did this with Mplayer a few years back to port a full-featured version of Mplayer for Solaris. Same licensing issues!
