You might wanna check this link out, it just sorted me out after experiencing same problem following upgrade to sxde 1/08.

It advised two things:

1. clean out any .fonts.cache* files
     # rm $HOME/.fonts.cache*

2. Restart fc-cache :  
    #  svcadm restart svc:/application/font/fc-cache:default
