SXCE simply does not have its act together as well as you think/hope.  To update it you need to download and burn and install a whole new DVD.

There may be a modern up-to-par OpenSolaris desktop with a final release of Project Indiana, but for the time being there is none.  As you are finding out, SXCE is haphazard as a consumer product.
