Another possibility is that you're not running the same version of qemu as the
architecture of the machine.

Try using one of the following for x86 systems :

qemu-system-i80586
qemu-system-i80686
qemu-system-x86_64


Using 64-bit vs 32-bit is probably the main issue here.
