Thanks for your answer... even if it is somewhat scary! :)

As a matter of fact I can live with GNOME. I wanted KDE mainly beacuse of Konqueror, which IMHO outclasses Nautilus in every respect. 
Since I have seen that it runs almost fine under GNOME and that I can use it for most of the tasks I need it to perform, probably I will be just happy with this situation... untill next holidays, when I will have time to address KDE issues !

P.S. 
I will also have to live without different wallpapers for different workspaces, but that is not truly disappointing...
