running .  /opt/jdsbld/bin/env.sh
and then exporting (my thanks to Laszlo Peter)

CC=/opt/SUNWspro/bin/cc
CXX=/opt/SUNWspro/bin/CC

has solved the problem of building eclipse. I am now able to run eclipse (albeit minimal, e.g. no web plugins etc.).
