Did you change any options in gnome-system-monitor?

E.g. decreased the update interval in 
Edit -> Preferences -> Processes ? 
Decreasing it to 1.0 seconds could be an
explanation why gnome-system-monitor is using
so much cpu time, and the load average of an
otherwise idle machine is at ~ 0.5 all the time.


Another option that could make a difference is
the "Solaris mode" in Edit -> Preferences -> Processes.
I think this must be enabled, to compare cpu usage
percentages from gnome-system-monitor with
other Solaris utilities like top or prstat.
